Children are always aware of the People’s living condition in their neighborhood and they want to improve it. At times even small activity done by children, to improve these living conditions will bring applause of the people of the neighborhood. This story shows how a very simple, but timely activity carried out by the members of the “Children Parliament” at Naryanarao Nangar, Challapally mandal, in Krishna District AP brought them to the lime light.
A three-day workshop from Monday, 27th to Wednesday, 29th February 2012 was held by BSK for 64 of BSK’s micro credit staff in the premises of Bosco Integral Rural Development (BIRD) in Guntur Town. The Director of Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK), Fr. Thomas Santiagu convened the workshop and introduced the Development Consultant Mr. Kurien Katticaren who was the resource person.
There are 22 Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACS) which BSK has formed. These MACS are located in the districts of East Godavari, Guntur, Chittoor, Khammam, and Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh State. These 22 cooperatives seek loans through BSK’s Empowerment of Women through Micro Credit Programme which was initiated with a substantial loan lent by the Switzerland-based Leopold Bachmann Stiftung through the good offices of the Austria-based Jugend Eine Welt International. The 64 participants who attended the three-day workshop are staff of BSK overseeing the MACS.
The enthusiasm of children is proverbial. Inertia increases with age. Here is a story of child participation in spite of adult non-cooperation. The children parliament of Somarjupally (Singarayakonda Mandal in Prakasam District) is in session in the evening of 10-1-2012. The Prime minister is leading a discussion on the mosquito menace in the village. S. Amani, the health minister is saying that the Somarajupally village has many places with stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. The other members are in agreement. The children cannot study or sleep well because of the mosquitoes. How to get rid of the mosquitoes? The Prime Minister is asking for suggestions from members. The majority are suggesting that they appeal to the Panchayat to spray the cesspools with some mosquito repellant.
