PHASE II: Shikari Project, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh

The Shikari community is a rural tribe from Central India that has migrated to Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh in recent years in search of better job opportunities to support themselves and their community. These families live in slum areas outside the city of Kurnool and have not received any formal education, nor do these parents have the appropriate parental skill to ensure the well-being of their children. Due to various reasons and circumstances families belonging to this community, particularly the husbands have engaged in the production of illicit alcohol in the recent past and have allowed their children and households to be severely neglected due to poverty and ignorance.

Our organization has been working with these families with the support of the local police to ensure that their children are enrolled in government schools, receive three regular meals, and have academic support through evening tuition centers. Women and youth who are part of these households are provided with skill training opportunities in tailoring and other trades at our technical school in Kurnool to better support themselves and their households through formal employment or the creation of their own businesses. These families require such assistance since they will become victims of labour exploitation and other vices that undermine human development.
